LITTLE ROCK A Missouri woman has pleaded innocent in Arkansas to computer fraud after authorities say she attempted to steal the identity of a girl who vanished from an Arkansas ball field in 1995.
A supervisor at Pulaski County District Court said 24-year-old Tonya Renee Smith of Hollister, Mo., pleaded innocent Thursday morning.
A public defender didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
Arkansas State Police said Smith sought to obtain a copy of the birth certificate of Morgan Nick through an Internet-based company. She allegedly represented herself as the girl, who was 6 years old when she vanished from an Alma ball field in 1995. The girl’s disappearance has never been solved.
State police said they arrested Smith on Tuesday. Jail records show she is being held in lieu of $200,000 bond.
