Dick Cheney, former vice president who told ABC News recently that it was a mistake to put Sarah Palin on the 2008 Republican ticket, said on Fox News’ Hannity show that his criticism “wasn’t aimed so much at Gov. Palin as it was against the basic process that [John] McCain used,” adding that political factors, such as the ability to draw more votes, should be secondary as to whether the person is ready to step in to replace the president.

George P. Bush, 36, nephew of former President George W. Bush and the eldest of three children of ex-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, has been named deputy finance chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.

Capt. Steve Young of the Kansas City, Mo., police department, said police took two boys from Columbus, Ohio, into custody after the two 13-year-olds stole a parent’s BMW and drove it hundreds of miles to Kansas City, where they were found sleeping in the vehicle in an alley.

Allen Troy Brooks, 67, was arrested in Columbia, Tenn., and charged with making 911 calls in a nonemergency situation over allegations he called emergency dispatchers at least nine times Saturday, including a call in which he asked if someone could send him a ride so he could buy beer, police said.

Kathrin Feyerabend, a German police spokesman, said Hannover police used olive oil to free a squirrel that had gotten its head stuck in a hole in a manhole cover, adding that sadly, the squirrel died several hours later, likely from stress.
