Second Child Dies From Heat Exposure

— A 3-year-old boy died Saturday from exposure after he was trapped in the family car, authorities said.

Benton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call in the northeast part of the county after receiving a call around 5 p.m.

The boy apparently got into the car and was unable to get out. Temperatures inside the car were extremely high, according to a news release.

Correction

The child was found in the car's interior. The original version of this story misstated where the child was found.

The name of the child was not released Sunday afternoon.

The child’s body will be sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab to determine the exact cause of death, the release states.

Sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate the death, although at this time there is no reason to suspect foul play, the release states.

Authorities released the name Sunday of a 2-year-old boy who died Friday afternoon in a car left in the Walmart parking lot in Springdale.

The Springdale police and fire departments found Joniah Darius Chronister unresponsive in a Ford Focus. Chronister was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

The boy was with his great-grandparents, William James Staten, 51, and Margette Inise Staten, 61, both of Springdale. He is the son of Christy Chronister, 26, also of Springdale.

The child was left in the car for just over two hours, according to authorities. The great-grandparents said they left the boy in the car for only 45 minutes.

Lt. Kevin Lewis, Springdale police public information officer, said Sunday the case would be turned over to either the district or circuit court prosecutor.

“It will be up to the prosecutors to determine if any charges will be filed. If misdemeanor charges are filed, it will go to the district court. If felony charges are filed, it will go to the circuit court,” Lewis said.

Lewis declined to speculate on what, if any, charges might be filed.
