PUBLIC VIEWPOINT It’s About Time For Immigration Reform

BELLA VISTA NEEDS SCHOOLS

Immigration reform is not being forced;

it is something that has been sorely needed but avoided by those fearful of possible unpopular political consequences.

I would guess when Ms.

Erd (Public Viewpoint, July 9) said “incontinence,” she meant Americans were expected to feel guilt for the inconvenience of the Hispanic population, not their possible urinary problems.

Immigration reform addresses the issue of children brought to this country, not the status of their parents. The vast majority of these kids have already been educated in our system.

Many no longer speak their native tongue, andmore than a few are now successful college students on their way to becoming productive members of society. To deport this talent would be a tremendous waste at a time when we desperately need educated, productive Americans.

Ms. Erd would have us believe the Hispanic population possesses some psychic power to alter our legal system. There are legal, albeit long and slow, means to citizenship. Now that illegal border crossings have been drastically reduced, we need to address the situation of families already here, and protecting the innocent children is a fi rst step.

T.A. SAMPSON

Cane HillThere is no joy in Mudville tonight over the failed school tax proposal by the Bentonville School Board. The whole episode was a loss to everyone. The Bella Vista Patriots were against the initiative from the start.

However, we feel it is not right to simply be against an issue without having a better plan to replace the bad one.

Why in the world would the people in Bella Vista want to commit themselves to 30 years of tax to build a school in Centerton?

Wouldn’t it be just as logical to build a school in North Africa? Why would we want to agree to bus our children to Bentonvilleor Centerton for the next 30 years? Our children in those schools would always feel like outsiders and unwanted guests.

Bella Vista is no longer a Property Owners Association village. We are the 14th largest city in Arkansas, and we need our own schools for our own children.

The Bentonville School District is too large. The Bella Vista Patriots will be looking into the possibility of developing our own school district and building our own schools and perhaps throw in a charter school or two. This will help reduce the overload the Bentonville schools are now experiencing.
