Transforming waste to worth

Saturday, April 21, 2012

Every day at American Composting Inc. of North Little Rock, workers use a green process to take waste products, including food waste, and give them new life in the form of compost, mulch and soil blends. This process of turning waste into worth is called beneficial reuse because the end product can be used to benefit the environment.

“Turning something to compost is the full definition of beneficial reuse,” said James R. Willits, owner and president of American Composting Inc. “We’re connecting the dots of recycling.”

American Composting makes all its products on-site. Compost, an all-natural product made from freshly ground green waste and wood products, can be used in pots and for building flower beds. American Composting products can be found at the company's facilities and at local nurseries. It is the dominant organic recycler in Arkansas. In fact, American Composting is one of the largest recyclers of organic wastes and by products in the south-central region of the United States.

Today, the company's 85-acre facility provides recycling services for residential and commercial customers throughout central Arkansas.

American Composting has developed a site-specific blend of organic byproducts that have allowed for accelerated decomposing, which in turn produces high-quality, nutrient-rich compost.
