Arkansas takes first game of Tuesday's doubleheader

— Arkansas tied a season-high 17 hits and the No. 17 Razorbacks beat Stephen F. Austin 8-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Baum Stadium.

Arkansas (27-10) got off to a quick start by scoring four runs in the first inning. Dominic Ficociello and Sam Bates both hit RBI singles and freshman Michael Gunn added a two-run single in the inning.

Bates hit his second RBI in the second inning and Brian Anderson extended Arkansas' lead to 6-0 with a RBI single in the third inning.

Junior left-hander Randall Fant got the start for the Razorbacks and earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters. The win was just Fant's second of the season with his only other win of the season coming in the second game of a doubleheader with Binghamton on March 10.

The only runs for SFA (14-23) came in the fourth, when Arkansas led 6-0. Chris Oliver pitched in the fourth and allowed a three-run home run to Bobby Loveless, who made his first start since the Lumberjacks played Lamar on April 5.

Trent Daniel earned his first save of the season by closing the game for Arkansas. The junior left-hander allowed just one hit in four shutout innings.

Bates had a break-out game despite struggling so far in conference game. The senior right fielder has hit just 4-31 in league play, but drove in four RBIs with a career-high four hits in the first game against the Lumberjacks.

The second game of the twinbill will start at 6:15. Nolan Sanburn (2-1 2.75 ERA) will get the start for Arkansas and right-hander Justin Choate (0-4 6.03 ERA) will be on the mound for the Lumberjacks.
