Trial of man charged in woman’s death to begin

Posted: April 1, 2012 at 2:24 p.m.

— Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the capital murder trial of a man accused of beating an elderly Hamlin woman to death inside a church in Wynne.

Cross County prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty for Rene Bourassa Jr. should he be convicted of killing 80-year-old Lillian Wilson, whose body was found June 6, 2010, by her pastor between two pews at Central United Methodist Church. Authorities believe a brass cross was used to bludgeon her.

Investigators allege Bourassa was driving through the area when his vehicle broke down near the church. A U.S. Marshals Service task force arrested him four days later in Bremerton, Wash.

A message left at the state Public Defender’s Commission seeking comment about the case wasn’t immediately returned on Sunday.
