NWA Media introduces NWAonline for the iPad

Posted: September 30, 2011 at 6 a.m.

Northwest Arkansas’ largest news media website, nwaonline.com, has introduced an application for Apple iPads, available now from iTunes store or at http://www.nwaonline.com/ipad.

The new application is host for the Northwest Arkansas edition of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the Springdale Morning News, the Benton County Daily Record, the Rogers Morning News and the Northwest Arkansas Times.

The app is free, according to Matthew Costa, online and information technology director for NWA Media.

Users can download three editions of the newspaper for free before being asked to subscribe. Existing print and online subscribers can register their account and view the Democrat-Gazette’s Northwest Arkansas edition and the local newspaper, depending where they live in the region.

Northwest Arkansas Newspapers LLC is a joint venture equally owned byArkansas Democrat Gazette, Inc. and Stephens Media LLC. The company was formed in September 2009.

“We are excited about the opportunity to respond to the ever-growing desire to have access to news 24/7,” said Crystal Thurman, director of advertising and marketing for Northwest Arkansas Newspapers.

“The iPad app gives our readers the familiar feel of flipping through pages with some snazzy new features - like local news updates - all at theirfingertips.”

Weekend-only subscribers can access those editions as well with the app.

Those who sign up for the digital editions will receive news updates throughout the day, Costa said. The digital edition is a replica of the classic newspaper format, allowing users to flip through pages and jump to their favorite sections.

“There’s no learning curve to this app. It really is for everyone,” he said.

Apple’s iPad was launched in April 2010.

In July, Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Inc. announced record third-quarter profits of $7.31 billion and revenue of $28.57 billion. The company said it sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, a 183 percent unit increase over the same quarter a year ago.

More than 15 billion apps have been downloaded by more than 200 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users worldwide, the company said recently. The store has over 425,000 apps with more than 100,000 native iPad apps available.
