No Decision Yet In School Board Race

Two votes separate two Fayetteville candidates

— It will be about 10 days before the race for the Zone 1 seat on the Fayetteville School Board is decided.

The unofficial results from Tuesday’s election show two votes separating incumbent Steve Percival and challenger James McGinty.

Percival polled 115 votes, or 50 percent; McGinty, 113 votes, or 49 percent. A total of 228 votes were cast, representing only 3 percent of the registered voters.

John Logan Burrow, Election Commission chairman, said the commission will audit the votes this morning as is the usual practice when an election is close.

The final winner won’t be known until Sept. 30 when absentee ballots from overseas are due back. There are five overseas ballots out, Burrow said.

Domestic absentee ballots were due back Monday and are included in the tally, Burrow added.

McGinty said he was disappointed in the outcome because of the low turnout.

Percival said, “We’ll just have to wait and see.”
