Of course they're students first. What's the difference in a football team taking the day for a football game and choir traveling for a choral event, the speech team going to a debate or band going to a band contest during school? All of those things happen every year. Everything DOES take a back seat to education. If you don't have the grades, you don't play, sing, debate or compete in a band contest.
