FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES CARVE OUT NICHE MARKETS TO KEEP CUSTOMERS

Bruce Parker, right, and his brother, Brent, own the Dollar Saver in downtown Rogers. The Parkers have owned the business for more than 30 years and the business has been operating for more than 40.

Max Ryan, Liz Fulton and Bruce and Brent Parker know a thing or two about survival.

FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES

Rowland’s Department Store became Ryan’s on July 27, 1965, when Troy L. Ryan bought the store, which is still at 202 E. Emma Ave., Springdale.

Grace Vawter and friend Dulice Garrett opened the Town and Country shop in 1960 in downtown Fayetteville. The ladies boutique has been at 9 S. Block Ave., on the west side of the square, since 1984.

Dollar Saver opened in downtown Rogers about 1967, when Jack Parker started buying overruns and excess stock from a fairly new retail company - Walmart. The discount variety store is still at 101 E. Walnut St. across from Frisco Station.
