— The Shiloh Christian cross country program has been among the best in the state in Class 4A in recent years, and a group of newcomers is hoping to keep it that way.

Both the girls and boys teams won state championships in 2009, and last season they each finished second at their respective state meets. But a wealth of top runners from those teams graduated in May, several now running in college.

“It’s going to be tough,” said girls coach Marla Richards. “We are going to be very young.”

Junior Maddie Elliott returns and will lead the Lady Saints. She was a state runner-up in 2009 and finished 10th last season at the state meet. Abby Hutton will also be counted on to score points for Shiloh.

On the boys side, Daniel Evans hopes to have an injury-free season after struggling last year with injuries. He placed fifth at the state meet in 2009.

“We think we have a chance to be competitive again this season if we can avoid injuries,” said boys coach Godfrey Siamusiye.

The Shiloh teams will host the Saints Invitational on Sept. 3. Richards said she expects around 1,500 runners to compete in the meet, which gets under way at 9:30 a.m. with a fun run for runners in grades 1-6.

The cross country meet will start at 10 a.m. with the junior high girls, and the final race will start at 11:30 a.m. for the senior boys 5K.
