— If the Springdale Har-Ber girls golf team wishes to make it back to state this year, the weight is being placed on a couple of players who are ready to take their game to the next level.

After losing Taylor Kline, who’s now golfing at Arkansas Tech, to graduation, coach Tim Aynes thinks senior Evan Verucchi and junior Molly Luster have what it takes to help carry the team.

“When you lose a low scorer like Taylor, I don’t know if we have anybody who will be hitting consistently in the 80s,” Aynes said. “If we can get three scorers in the 100-range, I think we can be competitive, and right now, we have two that are very capable.”

Aynes said the blow the team took from losing Kline was somewhat cushioned with Luster joining the team after moving to Springdale from Batesville.

On the boys side, senior Zach Coats carries the torch for the Wildcats, consistently shooting low scores that earned him a scholarship offer from Arkansas.

Har-Ber’s other top boys golfer is Candler Boortz, who also hopes to land a collegiate golf scholarship.

“Last year we had Zach shooting around par, but then it was kind of a big gap to our other guys,” Aynes said. “This year, the other guys are closing the gap.

“Candler has played a lot in summer tournaments, and I expect him to move from a high 80s player to a low 70s.”

Boortz agreed with his coach’s feelings that the rest of the team is progressing and believes everyone is capable of shooting nine-hole scores under

45 strokes.
