TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS DRAWS AREA WORSHIPPERS

Posted: October 8, 2011 at 5:08 a.m.

Jacqueline Harbaugh of Rogers reads the Latin-English missal for praying the traditional Mass during a Tridentine Mass on Sept. 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tontitown.

The Rev. Greg Hart faces the altar, his attention on the crucifix beyond. The Latin words he utters are meant for God’s ears, not the people in the pews.

FAST FACTS

TRIDENTINE MASS

The Tridentine Mass of the Roman Catholic Church was named for the Council of Trent from which it stemmed.

The council met in 25 sessions under three popes from 1545 to 1563.

Its main objective was to define church doctrine in answer to what it saw as Protestant heresies and enact a thorough reform of the Church.

The revised Roman Missal was released in 1570. This is the traditional form of the Mass used by Catholics worldwide until 1962.
