SUSPENDED PRODUCTION: Cargill Lays Off Workers
MEAT RECALLS COST COMPANY AT LEAST $2.4 MILLION A WEEK

Two product recalls that suspended ground turkey production at Cargill in Springdale sent 130 plant workers to the unemployment line Monday. The layoff affected nearly 11 percent of the plant’s work force of 1,200.

- About 28.5 million turkeys are raised each year in Arkansas for processing.
- Cargill’s four U.S. turkey plants processed 1.1 billion pounds in 2010, ranking third behind Butterball and Jennie-O.
- In Springdale, the Cargill plant processes about 364 million pounds of finished product a year, which is 33 percent of the company’s turkey production in the U.S.
- U.S. consumption of turkey was 16.4 pounds per person in 2010.
