HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS: Greenland grabs overtime victory

— The scenario played out like Siloam Springs wanted.

The Lady Panthers just didn’t execute on the freethrow line.

Trailing Greenland 57-55 with 8.9 seconds left in overtime Tuesday night, Siloam Springs guard Ashlin Stock intentionally missed a free throw, the Lady Panthers retrieved the ball, and sophomore Morgan Miller was fouled with a chance to tie the game with 2.9 seconds left.

But Miller missed the first free throw, and when the Lady Panthers tried the intentional miss again, Greenland corralled the rebound and Caitlyn Johnson hit a free throw with 0.1 left to secure a 58-55 victory at the Panther Activity Center.

“We got our hands on both of those [intentional misses]. We just couldn’t capitalize and score off of those,” Siloam Springs Coach Debbie Sharp said. “We talked about winning possessions and how to win close games. We’re going to have to learn how to grind out some of these close ones.”

Siloam Springs (1-2) led 53-50 with 1:35 left in overtime and had possession of the ball when Johnson stole it from Emery Rakestraw and scored in transition while being fouled. After Johnson hit a free throw to tie the game, Greenland (5-2) took the lead for good on its next possession when Anna Rogers grabbed a rebound off her own missed free throw and scored for a 55-53 lead.

Greenland led most of the game and made eight threepointers, including four by Holland Craise, who had 12 points. Ashley Hipps led Greenland with 16 points, while Johnson and Morgan Miller had nine points each. Miller hit 3 threepointers.

“We like to shoot the three, but we’ve got two great point guards that like to attack the basket,” Greenland Coach Alan Barton said. “If you stop the drive, we’ll let it fly.”

Lindsey Larkin’s game-high 26 points led the Lady Panthers, while Makenzie Sharp added 10 pointsBOYS SILOAM SPRINGS 71, GREENLAND 43

Siloam Springs (2-1) outscored Greenland (0-2) 27-9 in the second quarter to take control of the game and never looked back.

The Pirates held a 13-8 lead in the closing minutes of the first quarter, but the Panthers went on a 31-9 run to close the half and take a 39-22 lead into halftime.

Siloam Springs increased its lead to 56-35 going into the fourth quarter and initiated the running clock sportsmanship rule over the final two-and-a-half minutes of the game.

Payton Henson led Siloam Springs 31 points, while Zach Logan had 10 points.

Peter Barber led Greenland with 16 points.
