LANDMARK: Parties Consider Hotel

RENOVATION OF 1928 DOWNTOWN STRUCTURE COULD BE COSTLY

Originally called the Lane Hotel, this Rogers landmark at South Second and West Poplar streets has gone through a half-dozen name changes in its long history. Main Street Rogers and other interested parties are examining the future of the building with an eye toward returning it to service as a hotel.

The Lane Hotel, an elegant center of downtown Rogers when built in 1928, sits vacant and in disrepair.

FAST FACTS

Lane Hotel

The former Lane Hotel has been through several incarnations since it opened.

• S.A. Lane built the Spanish colonial-style building for $150,000 in 1928.

• Earl Harris of Harris Bakery bought the property in 1935 and renamed it Harris Hotel, which was known as the “Palace of the Ozarks.”

• From 1948 to 1963, it was the Hotel Arkansas.

• In 1967, the Defenders of the Christian Faith bought the building renaming it the Defender’s Townhouse.

• It was renamed Rogers Townhouse by new owners Joe and Dera Keen in 1977.

• In 1999 the became an assisted living residence called Peachtree at the Lane.
