Shelters Overcrowded

DIRECTOR: ROGERS FACILITY OVER CAPACITY FOR MORE THAN A YEAR

Posted: November 7, 2011 at 5:17 a.m.

Sly, center, a three-year old male poodle, jumps up and down in his cage Wednesday at the Rogers Animal Shelter. Despite hosting numerous adoption drives in the recent weeks, the Rogers Animal Shelter, which also serves as Bentonville’s shelter, is over capacity, housing 80 dogs and 54 cats. “We get from 4,500 to 5,000 animals through here in a year. That’s considerably more than this facility is equipped to handle,” said Justine Middleton, shelter superintendent.

Every day Bud Norman has to make a life-or-death decision. Norman is the manager of the Rogers Animal Shelter.

It's so sad and dispictable that humans won't take proper actions to be responsible for thier pets. Some of the best pets can be found at the shelter. I've known of some people that were Breeders, fortunately there's not $$ in it now, so they've quit.

We rescued a wonderful Lab-Jack Russell , 6 mo, female, shots, spayed, etc. and keeping her until she is adopted. Due to the overcrowding of shelters, we decided to keep her until adoption. My heart goes out to these organizations and families who cannot afford their pets. Contact anytime about Abby at 479-636-6969.

What will it take for Arkansas to develop an active, aggressive, low-cost spay-neuter program? I wonder who/what agency would be the best to research how other states have pulled this off, and get it rolling here, too.

We rescued a little Manx kitten that was thrown away like a piece of trash on our rural gravel road. He's a little pistol and it's taken a few years to get him civilized; he spent 6 months on the roadside before we were able to capture him. We love him and he's ours, now. But we can't adopt every animal that is dumped here. I have most unkind thoughts toward the people who dump them out here. I'm so glad that Washington county is starting their own facility. The folks in the FVL shelter have been more than accomodating; their hearts are truly in this work. Many, many blessings to the folks who can work at the shelters; I think I'd suffer too much trauma, and couldn't euthanize, I don't think.

Word on the street is that it is the veterinarian lobby that keeps putting the brakes on lost-cost spay neuter programs, which just turns my stomach. Because I do think more people would spay or neuter their animals if they could do it for a lower price.

I'm thrilled about the Washington County new animal shelter!

I too will be disgusted if I learn that it's the vets themselves holding up progress on this issue, because when I took our little Manx in for treatment, they just offered to put him down because he was so sick and infected and injured. I said, No Way, this little kitty is going to have as much time as he can on this earth experiencing what it is like to have safety, love, and enough to eat. But he lives, he lives, and he's charming. :-)

There is a low cost ($40-$50) Spay Neuter Clinic on Huntsville Ave., Springdale. Just opened late last Summer. Excellent work and nice people.
