Honored To Serve
WORLD WAR II VETERANS MAKE NEW MEMORIES IN CAPITAL
Posted: May 29, 2011 at 5:13 a.m.
Julius Russell salutes the grave of his son in Arlington National Cemetery. Russell visited the grave for the first time during an Honor Flight trip to the Washington, D.C., area. Walter Russell died July 4, 2008. Russell was escorted by “guardian” Judy Israel.
Julius Russell stood before the grave of his son, Walter, seeing for the first time his boy’s resting place, denoted by a simple white marker. In a photograph capturing the moment, Russell salutes the grave as row upon row of similar white headstones fan to his left, to his right and behind him. It’s a powerful reminder of the day, but it’s not as though he’ll need one.
