Editor's Note: Ashton McCombs of Fayetteville High School and Eric Parks of Haas Hall Academy were named to Northwest Arkansas Newspaper's All-Academic Team. Team members were brought together and asked their opinions on issues pertinent to themselves and the future.

What do you think has been the most important part of your education?

Ashton McCombs, Fayetteville High School: The Advanced Placement courses at FHS are incredible. A small setting, teachers are more intimate and help you learn. There is an excellent AP program at FHS.

Eric Parks, Haas Hall Academy: I would say speech class, because I had to work hard and it helped me learn how to work hard and to speak. Also, math classes because I plan to major in engineering.

What do you think will be some of the biggest challenges for your generation?

Ashton: We’re going to run into some serious energy problems and need to find viable ways for different alternatives. Also, dealing with new threats of terrorism against our country, dealing with more small terror cells.

Eric: Not using technology too much as a crutch. It’s good to use, but not overdo or spending too much time on anything that distracts from everyday life.

How do you think your time in local schools has prepared you for that?

Ashton: The ability to think critically, analyze problems, problem solve and come up with viable solutions to the challenges.

Eric: I don’t know. We’re not allowed technology while in school, which teaches me to stay away from technology.

What do you think the future holds for Northwest Arkansas?

Ashton: I think we’ll continue to grow, especially with the new Walton Arts Center and the art museum in Bentonville. The growth has been explosive and will continue. The University of Arkansas will help that. It’s coming up in the rankings. There is a lot of incentive to bring business to Northwest Arkansas.

Eric: I have no idea.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen at your high school?

Ashton: Enjoy it. Use it for yourself. Take advantage of all the opportunities which are available. It should be one of the best times of your life.

Eric: Work hard.
