Motorists Get Attention

POLICE POSITION TRAFFIC PATROLS IN KEY AREAS IN CITY

Posted: June 20, 2011 at 5:36 a.m.

When it comes to automobiles and driving in Fayetteville, there was a time in the not-too-distant past in which I never really worried about being pulled over during the course of a normal day.

I can understand you not being worried about being pulled over. I used to live there and moved away partly because of your lack of traffic safety. In my years there I never got more than a "warning" from your cops. I did get smashed into several times there, even tho that has NEVER happened to me in any other state. I just hope this crack down is a permanent thing and not just temporary. I dont know if anyone there ever compares traffic safety in nwa to the rest of the country, but it is scary in nwa. I live in a metro that is many many times the size of nwa and I have never seen a wreck happen here in the years I have been here. I very rarely even pass the aftermath of one - maybe once a YEAR. http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/809...

Most NWA police departments used to be a pro-active force on the roads. Now, with the amount of traffic in the area, most of them are staying out of the way and PDs have become a reactionary force. Oddly enough, I never see the blatant traffic violations get a second look from police. Anyone know that it's illegal to drive with just your parking lights on? I see it every day.
On a five lane highway.......which lane are you supposed to drive in? Is the right lane only for turning? Have you kept up with the traffic law changes year after year? Used to be you didn't have to use a turn signal unless you were turning. Lane changes was optional for using your turn signals (by state law). Now it's required that you use your turn signals when changing lanes. Headlights on when it rains? Yep...state law now, but how many police vehicles do I see with an officer on a cell phone not following state laws? Are the police here to educate the public? Can the public educate the police? Traffic safety is the driver's responsibility. Ask for too much control and you'll find out how much control you really want. Everyone here is guilty of doing something stupid in NWA traffic. The way things are, it's almost unavoidable unless you're impeding the flow of traffic (which is also illegal). Safe driving in NWA starts with you and me. If we would have more respect for others, we wouldn't need to worry about who's watching us and when. Next time you get behind a sleeper when the light turns green........just remember....they are probably texting which is also illegal, and if you honk your horn to wake them up, that might also be illegal as a vehicle horn is to be used for emergency only. Maybe we can all become more educated about the traffic laws. Then again...maybe not. Drive safely.
