NW Arkansas achievers

— Stacia Baughman , a University of Arkansas freshman pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance, is the new Boyer Fellow at the university’s Sam M. Walton College of Business.

Baughman graduated valedictorian from West Fork High School in 2010. She was the Student Council president and the National Honors Society president at West Fork.

The Boyer Fellowship was established in 1999 by UA alumni Tommy and Sylvia Boyer to encourage local students to study business at the university. Baughman will receive $12,500 per year for tuition and fees, room and board, books and travel expenses.

Baughman is the daughter of Susan Neyman of West Fork and Paul Baughman of Fayetteville.

Robert Ford, artistic director for Fayetteville’s TheatreSquared , has been nominated for a 2011 Edgar Allan Poe Award for best play.

The nominations were announced Jan. 21 by the Mystery Writers of America. Ford is nominated for his play The Fall of the House, which premiered at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in March 2010.

The play was also performed as part of TheatreSquared’s 2011 Arkansas New Play Fest.

Awards will be handed out April 28 at a gala at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City.

Paige O’Connor, a student at the University of Arkansas, is the January Arkansas Community Service Award winner.

The award is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Human Services’ Division of Volunteerism and the Arkansas governor’s office. The award recognizes residents throughout the state for their volunteer efforts.

O’Connor won the Individual Candidate Award for nominees ages 21 and under. KARK-TV in Little Rock will air a short vignette on O’Connor in February, and she will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Conway in July.

O’Connor is a child development major.

Jay P. Greene and Patrick Wolf - both professors of education reform at the University of Arkansas - were listed among the most influential education scholars in the United States by Rick Hess, resident scholar and director of education policy studies for the American Institute for Public Policy Research.

Greene came in 26th in the country, while Wolf was ranked 46th.

Northwest Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to those for their achievements.
