Arkansas town limits city flags to US, state

— The Marshall City Council has acted to keep the town's mayor from again raising the Confederate flag on the city's flag pole.

Little Rock television station KLRT reports that the council approved an ordinance Monday limiting the flags that can be flown over City Hall to the U.S. flag and the flag of the state of Arkansas.

Mayor Jim Smithson flew the Confederate flag above City Hall Jan. 14-18, including the Jan. 17 federal holiday marking Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. In Arkansas, the holiday is also designated as the birthday of Gen. Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Smithson said the Confederate flag above city hall was in observance of Lee's birthday.

The ordinance provides for a $1,000 fine for a first-offense conviction.
