Posted: January 25, 2011 at 3:43 p.m.

— A man identified as a suspect in the 1997 murder of the manager of a Harvest Foods store near downtown Little Rock has surrendered to police.

Thirty-two-year-old Cedrick Simpson was charged Monday with capital murder for the slaying of 27-year-old Kevin Patrick Bearden. Little Rock police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings said Simpson turned himself in Tuesday morning.

Bearden was gunned down during a robbery in which cash, checks and food stamps were stolen. The robbery on May 14, 1997, occurred at about 10:30 p.m., when the grocery store was closed, but police said the culprit managed to get inside through and employee entrance.

A conviction on a capital murder charge carries a sentence of execution or life in prison without parole.
