Southwest Boys, Ramay Girls Win Titles

— Fayetteville Ramay put on a shooting clinic in the second quarter as the Lady Indians cruised to the 7A-West Regional Tournament championship with a 51-36 victory over Greenwood Saturday.

The title is the Lady Indians’ first regional championship since 1996.

Springdale Southwest won the boys championship with a 55-44 victory over Springdale George.

Mollie Brewer led Ramay with 18 points and the Lady Indians guard was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Caylea Moore added eight points while Denesha White finished with seven points.

The Lady Indians outscored Greenwood 18-6 in the second period for a 27-10 halftime lead. Moore hit two 3-pointersin the second quarter while Brewer and White each had one 3-pointer.

“In the second quarter, we shot the ball awfully well,” said Ramay coach Carol Koenig. “Our defense picked up and we got a lot of steals. We pushed the ball in transition and got a lot of layups. It’s been a wonderful season.”

The Lady Indians were the No. 3 seed at the regional tournament but defeated Fort Smith Ramsey (43-37) and arch-rival Woodland (36-31) to advance to the championship game. Ramay won two of the three meetings with the regular season co-champion Lady Cowgirls this season.

Ramay’s Alexa Howard and White were named to the All-Tournament team.

In the boys championship, Southwest led 31-29 at halftime but outscored the Wranglers 14-6 in the third quarter to pull away. Southwest trailed19-6 early in the game. Landan Jones led the Cougars with 16 points while tournament Most Valuable player Jordan Dennis fi nished with 13. Ricky Jones was also in double figures with 11. Both Joneses were named to the All-Tournament team.

“We have had balanced scoring all year,” said Southwest coach Stephen Price. “We have had seven diff erent players lead us in scoring this year. George jumped on us pretty good. But our defense picked up and we shot the ball pretty well.”

Southwest won the boys regular season championship with a 17-1 record, four games ahead of George and Fayetteville Woodland. The Cougars’ only conference loss was a 52-42 loss to George Dec. 2.

After that setback, the Cougars won their final 19 games to finish with a 25-2 record.
