— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 28, 1911

A special car, which is advertised as the “Boys’ Corn Club Corn and Hog Special,” is to be run over the lines of the Rock Island and branch roads west of this city, starting March 10, as a “follow up” of the “Diversified Farming Special,” which was run through the state a few weeks ago. This car will be run over other lines of the Rock Island in Arkansas later, but so far the itinerary has been arranged for only the points to be visited west of Little Rock.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 28, 1961

The sponsor of the teacher retirement bill backed by the Arkansas Education Association today predicted passage of his measure in the House of Representatives, while the leader of the supporters of Gov. Faubus’ plan said his bill has a 50-50 chance. Montgomery County Rep. Ode Maddox, floor leader of the AEA bill, said that they had lost some ground over the weekend but that he thinks the teachers still have enough votes to pass the measure which would require a state contribution of about $6 million annually.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 28, 1986

A state Department of Health official Thursday called for a law requiring re-vaccination against measles of thousands of Arkansas public school and college-age students. Currently, the department reports 84 confirmed cases of red measles. Dr. Stuart Fitzhugh, deputy director of Health Protection and Services, asked the department’s executive committee to push for a law requiring all people vaccinated for red measles between 1964-1968 and those vaccinated before the age of 15 months to be immunized again.

Two Arkansas areas in violation of clean-air standards likely won’t face new federal mandates soon because of a ruling issued Tuesday by the U.S. Supreme Court. The justices unanimously upheld the federal government’s authority to set clean-air standards but ruled that the agency’s implementation of new ozone rules is unlawful. The ruling instructed the Environmental Protection Agency to rework the way it implements ozone standards.
