NW Arkansas achievers

— Logan Lockwood of Bella Vista has received a Freshman Academic Scholarship from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Freshman Academic Scholarship honorees are among the top students in the state of Arkansas and receive up to $1,000 towards tuition and fees.

Lockwood is a senior at Bentonville High School. He is the son of Ron and Marsha Lockwood of Bella Vista. He plans to study architecture.

Lona J. Robertson is the new associate dean of the University of Arkansas’ Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.

Robertson previously had served as an associate professor and coordinator of the apparel studies program at the UA. She replaces Donna Graham, who returned to her post as professor of agricultural and extension and education.

Robertson joined the UA faculty in 2006.

Ashlie Hilbun has been named assistant director of development for the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas.

Hilbun comes to the college after a two-year stint in the office of annual programs, where she managed social media and online communications strategies. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the UA.

Thupten Dorjee, instructor of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and culture at the University of Arkansas, won the OMNI Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology Faculty Award.

The award was established by emeritus professor James R. Bennett in 2009 to recognize faculty members who promote peace and the study of nonviolence.

Angie Smith-Nix, a clinical assistant professor of health science, kinesiology, recreation and dance at the University of Arkansas, has been elected vice presidentelect of the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Smith-Nix joined the UAfaculty in 1989 and is currently the Dance Education Council Chair for the Southern District.

Victoria “Tori” Adams and Cody Kees - both students at the University of Arkansas School of Law - earned third place in the American Bar Association Negotiation National Competition in Atlanta on Feb. 12.

Adams and Kees won the regional competition, held last fall at the UA to qualify for the national competition. The team was coached by law professors Carl Circo and Tim Tarvin.

Mike Thomas, a teacher at Ramay Junior High in Fayetteville, has been named the 2011 Arkansas History Teacher of the Year by the Arkansas chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Thomas wrote Digging Up Arkansas, a play about Arkansas history for elementary school children.

Roy Cordell, director of visual and creative arts at the University of Arkansas, will serve on the Council of Advancement and Support of Education’s District III board of directors.

The group is a professional organization for those who work in alumni relations, communications and development. Cordell lives in Fayetteville and has worked for the UA since 1993. His term will be two years.

Northwest Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to those for their achievements.

Civilian and military achievements are accepted. Please follow these guidelines: Achiever(s): 1) Must be an Arkansan or have graduated from a school in Arkansas. 2) Received an award, scholarship, medal or promotion.

Pageants, deans’ lists, graduations or military enlistments aren’t accepted.
