House approves tougher sex offender bill

— Arkansas lawmakers have approved a bill to tighten housing restrictions for sex offenders who officials say are at moderate risk of committing more crimes.

The House voted 65-20 on Monday to approve legislation that would bar Level 2 sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school, public park, youth center or day-care facility. Those restrictions currently apply to Level 3 and Level 4 offenders, who are believed to be the most likely to re-offend.

The head of the House judiciary committee spoke out against the bill, saying evidence hasn't proved tougher residency restrictions to be effective. Prison officials say the legislation could have the unintended consequence of making it harder for police to find the offenders.

The measure now heads to the Senate for a vote.
