— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 27, 1911 HOT SPRINGS - This resort looked like the same old town of yore today, and the liberal element rubbed their hands in glee at the vivid reminder of the “good old days,” for the “lid” went off with a joyful report, and Hot Springs passed as uneventful, yet wide open Sunday. The gambling houses have all resumed operations.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 27, 1961

Gov. Faubus said today nothing has occurred to head off the expected showdown in the House tomorrow between himself and the Arkansas Education Association over teachers retirement. He told a press conference, “There have been some more discussions but the hour is kind of late.” Two bills, one backed by the governor and one bythe AEA, are scheduled for floor action at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the House.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 27, 1986

Hercules Inc., one of two defendants in a $50 million lawsuit filed by a group of Jacksonville residents, apparently has settled out of court, sources said Wednesday. Jacksonville residents filed the multi-million-dollar suit against the Vertac Chemical Inc. plant in Jacksonville and Hercules, the former owner of the plant, claiming damage to their health from chemical contamination. On Wednesday, Hercules’ attorneys - Ronald May, H. Bradley Walker and Charles Schlumberger of the Little Rock law firm of Wright, Lindsey and Jennings - filed a notice in federal court that the company had withdrawn all of its pending motions and objections in the suit.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 27, 2001

President Bush’s first visit to Arkansas since his inauguration last month will be to North Little Rock’s Lakewood Elementary School on Thursday to promote his education agenda that calls for student testing and school accountability. A brief tour of selected classrooms and a presidential leadership forum on education in the cafetorium are the only events planned for Bush’s trip to the state, which he carried in November’s general election.
