4A NORTH REGION GIRLS Defense does job for Prairie Grove

— Prairie Grove and Shiloh Christian will have to settle for a stalemate this year - unless they meet again for the Class 4A state championship,

Prairie Grove held Shiloh Christian without a field goal for almost 17 minutes Saturday night en route to a 42-22 victory in the championship game of the Class 4A North Region tournament at George S. Jones Gymnasium.

“Our girls played hard, and they were focused,” Prairie Grove Coach Kevin Froud said. “We wanted a championship trophy, and they knew what we had to do. We hit some shots, did a better job on [Hannah] Persing and [Megan] Henley, and we had our big girl [Justyne Huber].”

Shiloh Christian’s dry stretch began after Persing scored inside to tie it at 4-4 with 4 minutes, 45 seconds left in the opening period. It didn’t end until Madison Lowe’s bucket with 3:53 left in the third quarter.

Prairie Grove was in full control as the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Saints 19-5 during that time. That included eight consecutive points to begin the second half, with Michelle Lumsargis’ bucket making it 23-10.

“Prairie Grove’s defense was outstanding,” Shiloh Christian Coach Vic Rimmer said. “I told Kevin that was the best defensive performance we’ve seen by far with their energy and physical play. It frustrated our girls, and that’s not normal from this group.

“Hopefully we learned something from it.”

Huber had 14 points to lead Prairie Grove. Lumsargis added 12 and Kendra Coyle 10 for the Lady Tigers.
