5A-WEST BOYS Trumbo’s run sparks Eagles

— Tucker Trumbo must not have liked the way things were looking on Senior Night.

Trailing 31-23 with just less than 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter Friday night, Trumbo scored eight consecutive points over a 1:58 span to tie the game at 31 heading into the fourth quarter.

It also began a 22-2 run for Huntsville as the Eagles went on to a 57-42 victory over Greenbrier to close out the 5A-West Conference regular season.

Huntsville (16-10, 7-7) clinched the No. 4 seed at the 5A State Tournament with the victory.

“We had gotten good shots the whole second half,” Huntsville Coach Jim Stafford said. “We justweren’t making anything, and then we hit a couple and got the crowd into the game and they really gave us a lift.”

Greenbrier (12-13, 4-10) held a 22-19 lead at halftime, using 3 three-pointers in a row to erase a six-point Huntsville lead.

The Panthers then built on the lead coming out of the break, leading by as much as eight twice - the first time on a Jordan Crank three-pointer and the other on a runner by Neal Burcham right before Trumbo caught fire.

Cody Stevens, Trumbo, Brandon Emitt and Bailey Counts then hit consecutive three-pointers to begin the final quarter to give the Eagles a 43-33 lead.

With the home crowd in a frenzy, Huntsville turned up the defensive pressure and outscored Greenbrier 14-9 from that point.

“We started to do a better job defensively, and werebounded better late in the game,” Stafford said. “When you make some shots, good things usually happen to you, and you always seem to play better defensively when you’re hitting baskets.”

Trumbo finished with 24 points to lead all scorers. Crank led Greenbrier with 15.
