— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 25, 1911, Now that the weather has moderated sufficiently the actual damage of the recent cold snap to the fruit crop may be definitely ascertained, and most of the growers in this section express the belief that the amount of the loss will be small. S.B. Ethridge was exhibiting two Elberta twigs here today, which showed only about one-fourth of the blooms to have been killed.

The General Assembly has nine working days in which to dispose of two major blocks of legislation before it: teacher retirement and the administration’s institutional construction package. At the end of the seventh week yesterday the assembly had received 913 bills since it convened January 9 as compared with 943 two years ago.

Arkla Inc. announced Monday it will buy Mississippi River TransmissionCo. for $305 million in cash, a deal that took a mere six days to complete and one that will increase Arkla’s gas sales by 50 percent. In an industry that has been the target of frequent mergers the last few years, the acquisition gives Arkla a strong foothold in other markets, most notably Greater St. Louis. St. Louis will replace Little Rock as Arkla’s largest metropolitan service area once the deal is completed in April.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 25, 2001

A series of fast-moving storms laced with tornadoes raced across the state Saturday, leaving extensive damage in their wake. The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management reported tornadoes in Pulaski, Lonoke, White and Fulton counties, with strong wind gusts, hail and rain reported throughout the state. Teri Pfeiffer, spokesman for the department, said the heaviest damage was reported in Lonoke County in the Old Austin community near Ward, as well as College Station and just south of Little Rock in Pulaski County.
