UCA signs two players

Central Arkansas completed its 2011 recruiting class Wednesday, signing linebacker Zach Bush of Denton, Texas, and defensive end Jonathon Woodward of Brentwood, Tenn.

Bush, 6-3, 190 pounds, had 109 tackles, including four tackles for loss, at Denton Guyer High School as a senior and helped lead the school to the Texas Class 5A state championship game.

Woodward, 6-6, 220, had 73 tackles and 11 sacks in two seasons at Ravenwood High School. He was also a two-year letterman in track and field.

The Bears signed 19 newcomers Feb. 2 and have four mid-term transfers already enrolled in classes.

Arkansas Tech adds three

Arkansas Tech signed three players Wednesday, Coach and Athletic Director Steve Mullins announced in a release.

The Wonder Boys signed defensive back Gavin Weber of Lake Charles, La., return specialist and running back Juan Ardley Williams of Prosper, Texas and running back and free safety Hunter Winston of Greenbrier.

The signees increased Arkansas Tech’s 2011 signing class to 29, with 26 signing with the Wonder Boys Feb. 2.

BASEBALL

ASU loses at Mississippi

Matt Snyder hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth as Mississippi (5-0) beat Arkansas State (1-4) 4-3 Wednesday night at Oxford-University Stadium in Oxford, Miss.

The Red Wolves were trailing 3-1 after four innings. But they tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning as Dustin Jones and Michael Faulkner scored on Ole Miss pitcher Bobby Wahl’s throwing error.

Michael George had the Red Wolves’ only RBI with a double in the second inning.

Brandon Farley took the loss for ASU in relief. Trent Rothlin picked up the victory for the Rebels, allowing two hits in five scoreless innings in relief of Wahl.

SOFTBALL

UAM sweeps Alcorn State

Arkansas-Monticello swept Alcorn State 1-0 and 5-4 in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Blossoms Field in Monticello.

In the first game, Sarah Hayslip’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scored Laura Tucker from second base for the game’s only run. Kayla Jackson allowed 4 hits while striking out 8 and walking 1, improving to 6-0 this season.

Jackson hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth to help the Cotton Blossoms complete the sweep. Hayslip had a RBI double while Jennifer Hickman and Katie Bowman each had RBI singles.

Faith Lund picked up the victory in relief, allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings. She struck out two and walked one.

TENNIS

UALR defeats Creighton

The UALR women’s tennis team (5-6) defeated Creighton (3-3) 4-3 Wednesday in Omaha, Neb.

The Trojans split their singles matches and took all three doubles matches to earn the victory. Veronique Luksich, Viktoriya Pluyta and Rebecca Van Den Houte won singles matches for UALR. Yana Kakovkina and Pluyta, Van Den Houte and Luksich and Nathalia Garay and Rachel Pierce helped the Trojans sweep the doubles matches with the Blue Jays.
