— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 1911

With a view toward furthering the movement toward beautifying the city of Little Rock, the City Beautiful Association is mailing a circular letter asking the active co-operation of the various organizations of the city in the work. The letter contains a copy of the resolution unanimously adopted February 11 at a mass meeting of the civic fraternal, commercial and religious organizations of Little Rock at the Chamber of Commerce.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 1961

The Arkansas Education Association today turned down a “compromise offer” on teacher retirement and called the plan “an offer to accept our unconditional surrender.” A prepared statement outlining the “compromise” and the AEA’s refusal to accept it was released by John A. Trice of Pine Bluff, chairman of the AEA Legislative Committee, and R.B. Chitwood of Lake Village, chairman of the AEA retirement committee.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 1986

Gov. Bill Clinton cameunder more than a little criticism of late about his support of the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission spending $850,000 in state money last summer for a series of full-page advertisements in the Wall Street Journal promoting the state. Nonetheless, the governor has continued to contend the money was well spent and that he supported the AIDC’s plans to spend another $150,000 on more ads this year. But the ad campaign was gutted when the AIDC lost more than $800,000 through the recent state budget cuts.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 2001

Arkansas parents who wonder how their public school compares to one across town or across the state will be able to find those comparisons and analyses on a Web site this summer. The state has been selected to participate in a project to convert student achievement data into information that educators and parents can use to improve instruction. Plans call for the Web site, set to go online in August, to provide viewers with information on top achieving schools for different student populations.
