Other matters before U.S. justices

— In other cases at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, justices:

Heard arguments in the case of a woman who tried to poison her husband’s pregnant lover by spreading toxic chemicals around the woman’s house and car and was sent to prison under a federal anti-terrorism law for using “chemical weapons.” Carol Anne Bond is seeking to challenge her conviction on 10th Amendment grounds, contending that the federal government’s decision to charge her in this case using a chemical-weapons law was an unconstitutional reach into a state’s power to handle what her lawyer calls a domestic dispute.

Decided against hearing Connecticut’s challenge to the federal No Child Left Behind law, ending the state’s six-year lawsuit over how to pay for the stepped-up student testing.

Dismissed an appeal challenging campaign disclosure laws in Washington state.

Rejected an appeal from cattle ranchers and decided to let stand a George W. Bush administration designation of 8.6 million acres in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah as critical habitat for an endangered owl.

Turned down an appeal from a man who was convicted of attempted murder in Louisiana by a jury’s 10-2 vote.

Passed up a chance to take another look at a 6-year-old ruling that struck down the display of the Ten Commandments in two Kentucky courthouses.

Refused to invalidate Nevada laws banning newspaper advertisements identifying places where prostitution is legal.
