— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 23, 1911

Washington’s birthday was observed as flag day all over Arkansas, and 10,000 miniature Confederate battle flags were sent out over the state to be sold to bring additional funds for the Confederate reunion. Late last night Chas McKee, chairman of the Subscription Committee, had not heard from any of the towns where the flags were sent, but said he was confident that quite a large part of the number sent out had been sold.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 23, 1961

Gov. Faubus said today he had “accepted a proposition” on the teachers retirement situation and if the Arkansas Education Association Committee accepts it tonight “the controversy is over.” Faubus made the revelation at a press conference at noon today but would not even hint what was entailed except that “both sides gave in a little.” 25 YEARS AGO Feb. 23, 1986

Babies are dying in Jacksonville and the city’s residents want Gov. Bill Clinton to take immediate action, members of a new environmental group told Clinton aides Saturday. About 30 members of the group People Against Contaminated Environments marched with picket signs at the Governor’s Mansion and then met with aides of the governor at the state Capitol. They expressed anger that the governor had not attended two public meetings, especially one held after the death of 3-month-old Joseph Shelton of Jacksonville, whose liver and kidney tissues were found to contain chlorophenols.

Hours after Bill Clinton’s presidential library foundation refused Thursday to fully disclose its donor list to Congress, foundation president Skip Rutherford was threatened with contempt of Congress and directed to testify before a House committee next week. “This is unacceptable,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Burton, chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform, after some, but not all, of the foundation’s subpoenaed records were delivered to Congress.
