Ark. House passes annual sales tax holiday

— The Arkansas House has passed a bill that would grant a sales tax holiday for parents buying school clothes and accessories for their children before the start of the school year.

The House voted 90-3 in favor of the measure on Wednesday.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Matthew Shepherd of El Dorado, says parents all over the state cross the border to shop during sales tax holidays in neighboring states. He says it's time that Arkansas offers its residents a similar deal.

Other representatives also spoke in favor of the bill.

Rep. Marshall Wright, D-Forrest City, says his family makes an annual trip to Memphis, Tenn., and buys more than school clothes. He says they do other shopping and sometimes spend the night.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
