Rogers Man Found Dead

BODY DISCOVERED ON MISSOURI ROAD

A Rogers man found dead along a McDonald County, Mo., road Sunday afternoon was believed to have been killed by multiple gunshots from a handgun, said Sheriff Robert Evenson.

The incident is being treated as a homicide, Evenson said.

Evenson said the man, Jack McCain, 67, was found on the road by a passerby. The body was found about 4 p.m., two miles north of Missouri 90 on Gobbler's Knob Road and eight miles east of Jane.

Evenson said he saw at least three gunshot wounds on McCain's body before it was removed from the scene by McDonald County Coroner Tracy Dowd. The sheriff said at least six shots were fired.

"We are working to develop suspects," Evenson said Monday. "The highway patrol and deputies from the sheriff's office interviewed people until 4 a.m. (Monday)."

Evenson said the interviews included family, friends and acquaintances of the man. He said none of those interviewed were suspects.

"We are just trying to develop leads," Evenson said.

The crime scene is located about four miles east of property McCain owned at the intersection of Missouri 90 and Missouri K. The property was the former location of the Elk River Retirement Center which McCain owned and operated until the state revoked its license in 1992, officials said. The license was revoked after McCain was charged in connection with stealing residents' funds. The investigation began after a resident went missing from the facility in 1990 and was found dead a year later about 400 feet from the home.

The property currently contains numerous salvage vehicles. Evenson said McCain owns two car lots in the Rogers area.

Evenson said an autopsy was being done in Springfield, Mo., late Monday.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office, Rogers Police Department and Arkansas State Police are also involved in the investigation, according to a news release.
