Panel votes down tuition and immigration bill

— An Arkansas House committee has refused to take up a bill to require illegal immigrants to pay out-of-state tuition at Arkansas' public colleges and universities.

Members of the House Education Committee on Tuesday voted against considering the bill that would require students to have U.S. citizenship or lawful presence in the country in order to qualify for in-state tuition.

The vote was six in favor of taking up the bill - nine against.

The bill remains tabled in the committee. It's sponsored by Republican Reps. Jon Woods of Springdale and Justin Harris of West Fork.
