Ark. Senate to take up 3 tax cut bills

— The Arkansas Senate is voting on proposed tax cuts on groceries, used cars and manufacturers' utilities, days after the House approved its own wish list of tax relief measures.

The Senate plans to vote on the three tax cuts Tuesday afternoon. They include a half-cent cut in the sales tax on groceries that Gov. Mike Beebe is advocating.

That cut would cost the state $20.8 million and would take effect July 1.

The Senate also plans to vote on a proposal to raise the sales tax exemption on used cars from $2,500 to $5,000, which would cost the state $5.8 million in the coming fiscal year. Another proposal would cut the sales tax that manufacturers pay on utilities, a reduction that would cost $7.04 million in the coming fiscal year.
