5A-WEST GIRLS: Siloam Springs pulls off inside job

— Siloam Springs knew Greenbrier was stocked with several talented guards, so it figured its best shot would be looking for high-percentage shots around the basket.

It was right.

Siloam Springs hit 51 percent of its shots - many from close range - as it eased to a 47-34 victory Monday at Panther Arena.

Siloam Springs (16-7, 8-3 5A-West Conference) hit 21 of 41 attempts from the field and pulled away in the second half as it won its fourth consecutive game.

“We really felt like in their 2-3 matchup we could take advantage and isolate them inside,” Siloam Springs Coach Debbie Sharp said. “I really thought that’s where we really wanted to get the ball. The kids bought in, and we got the ball where we wanted against their defense.”

Allie Wade led Siloam Springs with 17 points, while Laken Grigg added 11.

Grigg connected on a three-pointer for Siloam Springs’ first points of the game and Makenzie Sharp hit a three-pointer, but the rest of Siloam Springs’ baskets came from inside the three-point line. It was a relatively clean game, with only 15 fouls called and both teams shooting a combined 10 free throws.

The game was tied at 13 after the first quarter, but Siloam Springs outscored Greenbrier 13-5 in the second quarter to take control.

Siloam Springs also did a nice job defensively on Greenbrier’s leading scorer, Cicely New, who finished with 19 points. New scored 27 points Jan. 8 in a 40-39 loss to Siloam Springs at Greenbrier. She made 3 three-pointers Monday.

The loss was a tough onefor Greenbrier, which is battling Huntsville and Alma for the league’s fourth and final playoff spot.

“I expected more from my girls,” said Greenbrier Coach Todd Schaefer, whose team was coming off a close loss to Greenwood on Friday night. “I’m sure we can sit here and talk about all the built-in excuses we may or may not have, but we didn’t demonstrate the type of play that I thought we might have coming off of our games last week.” GREENBRIER (34) Rowden 1 0-0 3, Madden 2 0-0 5, Hardin 0 0-0 0, New 7 2-2 19, Nolan 0 2-2 2, Dean 1 0-0 2, Reynolds 1 0-0 2, Stringer 0 0-0 0, Russell 0 1-2 1, Smith 0 0-0 0.
