5A-WEST BOYS: Harrison zeros in against Huntsville

— Harrison started hot Monday night and never let up as it routed Huntsville 91-69 to stay in the hunt for the 5A-West Conference title.

Alex Rose, Dalton Young and John Colliver combined for 67 points to lead the Goblins (21-4, 9-3). Rose and Young also combined for 11 of the Goblins’ 14 three-pointers, with Rose finishing the night with a game-high 29 points.

Both teams put on a shooting clinic in the first quarter as they combined for 12 threepointers and 52 points. Huntsville (15-9, 6-6) hit seven from behind the arc in building a 25-19 lead, but the Goblins finished the first quarter with an 8-0 run, taking a 27-25 lead on a three-pointer at the buzzer by Young, who scored 13 of his 19 points in the opening quarter.

The Goblins kept shooting and making most of their shots in the second quarter as the Eagles began to miss on their end, and the Goblins never trailed again following the first quarter.

Huntsville pulled within a point twice in the first minute of the second quarter, but the Goblins outscored the Eagles 25-14 in the period with Rose’s three-pointer at the buzzer giving Harrison a 52-39 advantage.

Bailey Counts led Huntsville with 21 points, while Cody Stevens had 14.

GIRLS HUNTSVILLE 44, HARRISON 41

The Lady Eagles led the Lady Goblins the entire game but had to withstand a last-second three-pointer.

Huntsville led 34-29 going into the fourth quarter and was up 40-37 when Harrison’s Chelsea Covan missed a threepointer that could have tied the score, but Mallory Honeycutt snared the rebound, stuck it back in and was fouled with 19.4 seconds left.

Honeycutt missed the free throw, however, and Huntsville’s Sydney Striplin was fouled with 15.8 seconds left. She made both ends of the 1-and-1 as the Lady Eagles went up 42-39. Kylee Quattlebaum’s layup with 6.3 seconds left made it 42-41, then Lacey Jones hit two free throws to put Huntsville up 44-41 with 4.7 seconds left.
