Moncrief to speak at Downtown Tip-Off Club

Sidney Moncrief will speak at noon today at the weekly meeting of the Downtown Tip-Off Club at the Wyndham Riverfront hotel in North Little Rock.

Moncrief was an all-state player at Little Rock Hall and an All-American at Arkansas, including the 1978 Final Four team. In 1979, Moncrief was the fifth overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks and played 12 years in the NBA.

Annual membership to the Downtown Tip-Off Club is $40. Lunch, which begins at 11:15 a.m., is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

Hendrix men clinch No. 4 seed

Hendrix rallied from a five-point deficit with less than five minutes to play to force overtime, and would need a second overtime to beat Austin College 76-74 Sunday in Sherman, Texas.

The victory gives Hendrix (10-15, 5-11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) the No. 4 seed from the west division in the SCAC Tournament that begins Friday in Jackson, Miss.

Nick Heathscott led Hendrix with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals and Ammon Martin added 16 points. Jaren Riley also added 12 points and Chris Goodman scored 10.

Hensy, Byler lead Hendrix women

Caty Hensy scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds off the bench to help Hendrix to a 69-55 victory over Austin College on Sunday in Sherman, Texas.

The Warriors (7-16, 5-11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) started the game on a 15-3 run and later went on a 21-0 run to extend their lead.

Christina Byler scored 20 points for the Warriors and Wyvonne Hawkins added 9.

Hendrix will start the SCAC Tournament on Friday in Jackson, Miss., as the No. 1 seed from the west division.

TENNIS

Arkansas women rebound for victory

No. 19 Arkansas lost to top-ranked Stanford on Friday, but defeated No. 18 Washington 4-0 Saturday at the ITA National Indoors Championship in Charlottesville, Va.

Arkansas improved to 8-2 while Washington fell to 7-3.

Jade Frampton, Emily Carbone and Stephanie Roy all won singles matches in straight sets for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas men fall to Tulsa

Arkansas lost to Tulsa 5-2 Sunday in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks lost the doubles point for the first time this season. Matt Walters and Matt Hogan won singles matches for Arkansas.

SOFTBALL

UAM finishes Chill-Out with victories

Arkansas-Monticello beat Barry 6-3 and Wayne State (Mich.) 7-6 in its final two games of the Charger Chill-Out on Sunday in Decatur, Ala.

The Cotton Blossoms (9-1), who are ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, beat No. 6 Wayne State for their second victory over a top 10 team in as many days. UAM beat No. 2 North Georgia 6-1 Saturday.

VanDam wins consecutive Bassmaster Classic

Kevin VanDam altered records by winning his second consecutive Bassmaster Classic and his fourth overall Sunday in New Orleans, beating Aaron Martens by nearly 11 pounds.

VanDam had a catch of 28 pounds Sunday to finish with a Classic-record three-day total of 69-11 and claim the $500,000 top prize.

He tied Rick Clunn for the most Bassmaster Classic titles and most consecutive. His three-day total topped Luke Clausen’s record of 56-2 set at Toho in 2006. Martens caught 25-14 Sunday to finish with 59-0 and finished second in the Classic for a record fourth time.

Scott Rook of Little Rock finished seventh with a 48-15 ounce total.
