Second thoughts

— It’s time to shear the Beard

Ungroomed and unmatched, Brett Keisel’s beard has taken on a life of its own. There are two Facebook pages dedicated to it, along with a Twitter account.

There are also T-shirts, with some commanding fans to “Respect the Beard!” and others to “Fear the Beard!”

Underneath all that hair?

Another beard.

“I didn’t expect it, I really didn’t,” the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end told the Steelers’ official website. “... It’s really getting out of control now. It will be good to take it off and start with another one.”

Keisel is planning to shave off his beard Thursday in Pittsburgh at Diesel Club Lounge to benefit cancer programs at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh at UPMC.

It’s being promoted as “Shear the Beard.”

And Keisel’s wife, Sarah, is going to help him get rid of the beard.

“She has been awesome throughthis whole thing, with her husband looking like the big scary guy from Star Wars, [Chewbacca]. She will be happy to have her husband not looking like Chewie and get back to the man she married.”

One thing that does have Keisel a little worried is if his son Jacob will recognize him clean-shaven after the two-yearold looked at a picture of his dad at the Steelers office earlier this week without facial hair anddidn’t realize it was him right away.

“I am concerned I am going to go into his room in the morning and he is going to yell, ‘Stranger, stranger,’ ” Keisel said. “It will be fun. He will recognize my voice and know it’s me. I think he will appreciate his dad looking a little cleaner.”

Don’t adjust the TV

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture.

Hockey commentator DonCherry’s not going anywhere, at least not for another season.

The outspoken former Boston Bruins and Colorado Rockies coach, known for his often loud andsometimes elaborate suits that do for the NHL what John Daly’s pants do for golf, renewed his contract with Hockey Night in Canada through the 2011-2012 season, the CBC television network announced Saturday.

“Don has been a part of the CBC Hockey Night in Canadafamily since 1980,” said Kirstine Stewart, executive vice-president of CBC English Services, “generating passion and debate among hockey fans everywhere.”

Of course, most of that debate has been over the color balance on the television.

Escape artist

An analysis of FBI crime data shows that Orlando, Fla., is the U.S. metropolitan area with the third-highest risk of crime, according to a USNews.com report.

Orlando is tied with Birmingham, Ala., behind St.

Louis and Atlanta, just ahead of Detroit.

Orlando is more dangerous than Detroit? Maybe that’s why Magic center Dwight Howard is considering free agency.
