Deputies Arrest Kansas Fugitive

— Benton County Sheriff’s deputies captured a Kansas fugitive Saturday after a brief standoff at a residence in the Siloam Springs area, according to Benton County Sheriff’s officials.

Dusty Lee Herring Jr., 23, of 119 S. Chautuqua St., in Wichita, Kan., was being held Sunday in the Benton County Jail in connection with felony out-of-state warrants for robbery, aggravated robbery, first-degree battery, possession of firearms by certain persons and revocation of a suspended sentence or probation.

Herring was a fugitive from Sedgwick County, Kansas, Benton County authorities said.

Detectives with Mayes County Sheriff’s Office, in Pryor, Okla., called Benton County authorities Saturday with information that Herring was hiding at 21941 Sawmill Road in the Siloam Springs area, Benton County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

Deputies went to the address and found Autumn Selle, Herring’s girlfriend, in the residence, police said.

Selle told deputies Herring was hiding in the back room of a single-wide trailer and confirmed Herring was armed but said she did not know where the firearm was left in the residence, according to officials.

Deputies took up positions around the residence after trying to get Herring to come out, set up a perimeter and waited for SWAT officers, deputies said.

A short standoff ensued before Herring was captured while attempting to escape out the back door of the residence, according to authorities. Herring was taken into custody without incident, Benton County officials said.

“The on-duty sergeant and deputies did a great job of backing off and setting up a perimeter, knowing he was armed and had a violent history,” said Capt. Mike Jones, head of the patrol division for the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. “My hat’s off to them. Through their work and patience, it paid off with him being captured and no one injured.”

On Friday, Herring and several other suspects were in two different stolen vehicles in Mayes County, Okla., when a deputy started a pursuit with them, officials said.

Herring was able to get away after abandoning his vehicle, along with his girlfriend, Selle. Mayes County deputies were able to get an address in Benton County from the people in the other vehicle they arrested, police said.

Oklahoma deputies said the people arrested also told officials Herring was armed with a handgun and he may have stolen another firearm from one of the stolen vehicles.

Herring is currently in the Benton County Detention Center waiting an extradition hearing to Kansas. Selle was released at the scene and may face charges in Mayes County.
