— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 20, 1911 HELENA - The entire city of Helena may be paved if agreements are reached between the business men at a smoker to be given at the Cleburne Hotel in this city next Tuesday night. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the paving of the city and to then inaugurate a campaign with a view of immediately having the work done.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 20, 1961

It became apparent today that Governor Faubus and the Arkansas Education Association are finally going to meet head-on on the floor of the legislature, something the legislators wanted to avoid. The governor held a meeting with about 20 legislators, both for and against his “5-5” plan on the teacher retirement controversy, and when the session was over Faubus agreed that all they had done was to mull over old arguments.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 20, 1986

The state Workers’ Compensation Commissionordered an investigation Wednesday of all workers’ compensation insurance programs - public and private - arranged in the state by Arkansas affiliates of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., including Martin & Associates Inc. of North Little Rock. The investigation apparently will include a statewide workers’ compensation insurance pool arranged by the Martin firm. John Evans, an agent with Martin & Associates, said 41 Arkansas cities and counties were in the pool.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 20, 2001

Arkansas State Police Director Col. Tom Mars, who acknowledges having numerous disagreements with the State Police Commission, announced Monday that he’s resigning June 1 so he can return to practicing law. Gov. Mike Huckabee and Mars said they called a press conference at the state Capitol to end rumors about how Mars stepped down and what his future holds. “I’ve heard so may incredible stories over the weekend it’s become almost a source of great amusement,” Huckabee said.
