— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 1911

Thirty-four strong, the suffragettes of Little Rock marched upon the Constitutional Committee of the House of Representatives of the Arkansas General Assembly yesterday afternoon, only to find that the members of this committee had “silently folded their tents and stolen away,” with the exception of one lone Republican member, who stood before the advancing host and declared with fear and trembling that he knew nothing of an engagement the suffragettes declared that they had with the committee. Immediately after the house adjourned the suffragettes took possession of the House of Representatives and hoisted their banner in the campaign for “votes for women” in Arkansas.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 1961

Gov. Faubus has planned for introduction a bill which would permit the state to acquire land around the capitol to prevent commercial enterprise from closing in on the state building. His bill, to be introduced probably this week, would create the “State CapitolGrounds Commission” and authorize it to buy certain lands when the money becomes available.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 1986

The state Board of Education ended a stalemate Tuesday with a 4-3 vote to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court the ruling of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at St. Louis in the Pulaski County school desegregation case. Assistant Attorney General Randy McNair said the appeal was being prepared and would be submitted to the Supreme Court by the March 7 deadline. The 8th Circuit found the state was to blame for segregation among the districts.

House Speaker Shane Broadway has shrugged off Gov. Mike Huckabee’s warning that “disastrous political consequences” await lawmakers if they vote to scrap key provisions of the tobacco-spending initiated act approved by voters last year. “The governor is obviously being defensive of his program,” he said. “We want to do the will of the people or we wouldn’t be here.”
