Lady Rebels Take Control Early

— Late in the fourth quarter Friday night, Fort Smith Southside sophomore Calli White made a turnaround no-look pass to senior Emilie Gray underneath their team’s basket.

Gray took the pass for a wide-open layup, which extended Southside’s lead to 28 points with 6 minutes, 26 seconds left in the game.

It was that kind of night for the Lady Rebels.

Southside took control of the game early in the first half and never looked back in a 62-29 victory over Springdale High in Southside Gymnasium.

Gray finished with a game-high 25 points, while White scored 11 to lead Southside’s offensive attack.

“I wish we could have a game like that all the time,” Southside coach Sherry White said. “We got off to a great start and just never slowed down. It was especially meaningful because it was Senior Night for our players.”

Springdale (6-18, 1-10 7A-West Conference) committed 24 turnovers, which led to 30 Southside points. The Lady Red’Dogs had nine turnovers in the first half alone and only shot 45 percent (11 of 24) from the floor overall.

Leading the way for Springdale was senior Jasmine Gilyard, who scored 12 points and pulled down three rebounds. Senior guard Tiffany Wiseley also scored six points from two third-quarter 3-pointers.

Southside (13-9, 6-4) invoked the mercy rule with 5:19 left in the game when Gray made two foul shots, making the score 58-27.

“We just had too many turnovers, it’s as simple as that,” Springdale coach Scotty Person said. “However many we had, it seemed like we had a ton more. We’re in a tough situation, but we’ve got three games left and we’ve got to continue playing hard in every game.”
