Spring Break Option Still In Air

— Two days during spring break may be used to make up snow days in the Bentonville School District.

The district already has used 10 snow days this year because of inclement weather.

Faculty and staff voted Thursday on the option of using March 21-22 as makeup days, cutting a week of spring break to three days.

More than 1,000 district employees voted by the end of Thursday, but those who did not vote will have until Monday. The survey was distributed to 1,400 employees.

Sixty-eight percent voted were in favor of using the spring break option, while 32 percent were against, said Dena Lingo, executive director of elementary education for the district.

Lingo said Superintendent Gary Compton and the school board will review the information before voting.

Faculty and staff approved using Monday as a makeup day during a vote Wednesday. Monday was scheduled as a professional development day for staff.

State law says faculty and staff must vote on a change of contract or working conditions, Compton said previously.

The board did not need to approve school on Monday because faculty and staff already were scheduled to work.

Jared Lawrence, a senior at Bentonville High School, is not happy about losing two days of spring break.

“We have gone here for four years and they have never done this before,” Lawrence said. “Why would they do this now in middle of our senior year of school?”

Snow days have been added to the end of the academic calendar in the past.

Travis Riggs, school board president, said he will support whatever the majority of faculty and staff decides to do.

“Personally, I think we are jumping through a lot of hoops,” Riggs said. “If we use two days it is not a big deal, but we will have to hire substitutes to replace teachers on vacation.

“I think it is just one of these things that we need to make a decision and get it behind us so we know.”
