Rogers Heritage Splits Duals

Rogers Heritage managed a 39-28 win over rival Rogers High, but fell 36-30 to Fayetteville on senior night Tuesday in War Eagle Arena in Rogers.

Seniors Paul Coonce (160 pounds) and Cole Bundy (145) each picked up two wins for the War Eagles.

Heritage’s Jesus Gomez earned a tough 3-2 win over Rogers’ Edwin Santos in three overtimes at 215, but lost 5-3 to Fayetteville’s Devin Bowers, the defending Class 6A-7A state champion.

Teammate Kevin Rivers also won a tough match, 3-1, over James Stewart of Rogers at 285, but lost 4-3 in two overtimes to Fayetteville’s Giovanni Negrette.

Heritage coach Doug Freeman said his team was inconsistent Tuesday.

“We were truly schizophrenic on the mat,” Freeman said. “One moment we had incredible effort ,the next we give away a match. We have to be much better at conference and state.”

Sophomore Logan Evans (135) was out with an injury Tuesday, but should be ready for the state tournament Feb. 25-26, Freeman said.

Jake Humphries (119), Isais Aereas (125), Chris Ogle (130), Nick Mulcahy (135) and Brandon Mulcahy (152) earned wins for Rogers against Heritage.
